A quotation is the repetition of one expression as part of another one, particularly when the quoted expression is well-known or explicitly attributed (as by citation) to its original source, and it is indicated by (punctuated with) quotation marks.

A quotation can also refer to the repeated use of units of any other form of expression, especially parts of artistic works: elements of a painting, scenes from a movie or sections from a musical composition.

The rest of this article addresses only written or oral quotations.

Reasons for using quotations

Quotations are used for a variety of reasons: to illuminate the meaning or to support the arguments of the work in which it is being quoted, to provide direct information about the work being quoted (whether in order to discuss it, positively or negatively, to pay homage to the original work or author, to make the user of the quotation seem well-read), and/or to comply with copyright law. Quotations are also commonly printed as a means of inspiration and to invoke philosophical thoughts from the reader.

How do you cite a quotation in a paper you are citing?
Q. APA format. An author has quoted and sourced another author in his article. I would like to use the quotation, but do not have access to the quoted source, so don't really want to use it in my work's cited list. How do I cite this within the paper?

A. This is directly from the manual... For example, if Allport's work is cited in Nicholson and you did not read Allport's work, list the Nicolson reference in the the reference list. In the text, use the following citation: Allport's diary (as cited in Nicholson, 2003)

What is the International Standard quotation of the Bible for book?
Q. Currently I'm editing an english devotional translation to other language. And I have no clue what is the standard of quotation should be. Sometimes the book say Matthew 12:5-6. But sometimes they say in a bracket (Matt. 12:5-6) So anyone can help me a link or article that provide such information. I tried to googling it but can't find it. Thanks much, and really appreciate for the help.
