AP STYLEBOOK FOR JOURNALISM?
Q. When writing an article for the news, how do I write time? For instance: "it was 8:00 when the kidnapping occured".
Asked by brainiac - Fri May 1 09:26:37 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 8 p.m. Never write, 8 p.m. at night, or last night at 8 p.m. or this evening at 8 p.m., because "p.m." indicates night time. So... 8 a.m. 8 p.m., and for 12:00, write, midnight or noon. Don't write 12 midnight or 12 noon, because you're once again repeating yourself.

How to type "out of control" in AP style?
Q. Hi all, I can't seem to find "out of control" in my AP stylebook (2009). I am writing an article where my lede says "spun his car out of control". Should it be "out-of-control"? Thank you! Please only respond if you have experience in journalism and using AP style.

A. It should say: "...spun his car out of control," exactly as you have it written above. If you were saying it this way, it would need those hyphens: "His out-of-control car spun..."

Is half price hyphenated per ap style?
Q. According to AP Style, should it be "half-price" or "half price." My stylebook doesn't directly mention either.

A. The rule is to check the dictionary. But -- one short cut is to think adjective vs. noun. In other words: Kris saw a dress at Macy's for half price. BUT... Kris saw a dress at Macy's as part of a half-price sale. Sometimes when you have an adjective, it cuts down on confusion to throw a hyphen in.

What style do magazines typically use?
Q. i.e., Chicago Manual of Style? AP Stylebook? Other sources?
Asked by socmum16 - Sun Aug 5 18:12:49 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Nearly all consumer magazines (i.e. People, US Weekly, National Geographic, etc.) use AP style. Specialty magazines or trade magazines may use Chicago style, but that's rare.

Advice needed for freelance writing position!?
Q. I have been writing stories since I was young and have always loved it. I saw an ad in a local women's mag, and I really want to apply. Here's the ad: "If you love writing stories about and for women, we'd love to hear from you. Attention to detail and knowledge of AP style required. Please send resume, three writing clips and a cover letter." So I am just wondering what kinds of writing clips to send? How long should they be? I have many blogs, but do you suggest they be women related considering that's what the position calls for? Or just an example of how I write? I am not very familiar with AP style either, so any resources would be great! Someone suggested that I get the AP Stylebook, but I wasn't sure. I really would love to have… [cont.]

A. You can get the AP stylebook at big bookstores and on line. Handy to have. If you have non-blog clippings, I would put them at the top of the list. I'd bet the editors would be interested in seeing if your work has been accepted by professionals somewhere else; it would get you some attention. Otherwise, take your three best stories, present them as well as possible, and send them in. I'm not sure what the magazine publishes in terms of length -- try to match your clips to what they print. If you have a long story (50 paragraphs?) and it prints those stories, send that along. And don't be discouraged if you get turned down early. It happens to everyone. Just keep at it.
