The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, usually called the AP Stylebook, is a style and usage guide used by newspapers and in the news industry in the United States. The book is updated annually by Associated Press editors, usually in June.

Reporters, editors and others use the AP Stylebook as a guide for grammar, punctuation and principles and practices of reporting. Although some publications use a different style guide, the AP Stylebook is considered a newspaper industry standard and is also used by broadcasters, magazines and public relations firms. It includes an A-to-Z listing of guides to capitalization, abbreviation, spelling, numerals and usage.

Guys in Journalism classes: Do u follow ur AP Stylebook, or do you just type without checking, nowadays???
Q. I still use my AP Stylebook.

A. I'm not a reporter, but I am very fluid in my choice of words. If you are familiar so much with Superman, take some advice Perry gave to Clark. There's no such thing as great stories, great reporters MAKE great stories

Correct Use of Military Titles in Correspondence ?
Q. Can anyone give me a source for the correct use of military titles in correspondence. It appears that the AP stylebook is quite different from what is considered correct in military correspondence. Is there a definitive guide anywhere. If i am writing to Lieutenant Colonel Joe Blow, is it LTC Joe Blow Lt. Col. Joe Blow when is it appropriate to use the branch of the military after the name Lt. Col. Joe Blow, U.S. Army (Ret.) etc Is there a former PAO staffer out there that can clarify ??? Thanks

Advice needed for freelance writing position!?
Q. I have been writing stories since I was young and have always loved it. I saw an ad in a local women's mag, and I really want to apply. Here's the ad: "If you love writing stories about and for women, we'd love to hear from you. Attention to detail and knowledge of AP style required. Please send resume, three writing clips and a cover letter." So I am just wondering what kinds of writing clips to send? How long should they be? I have many blogs, but do you suggest they be women related considering that's what the position calls for? Or just an example of how I write? I am not very familiar with AP style either, so any resources would be great! Someone suggested that I get the AP Stylebook, but I wasn't sure. I really would love to have… [cont.]

A. You can get the AP stylebook at big bookstores and on line. Handy to have. If you have non-blog clippings, I would put them at the top of the list. I'd bet the editors would be interested in seeing if your work has been accepted by professionals somewhere else; it would get you some attention. Otherwise, take your three best stories, present them as well as possible, and send them in. I'm not sure what the magazine publishes in terms of length -- try to match your clips to what they print. If you have a long story (50 paragraphs?) and it prints those stories, send that along. And don't be discouraged if you get turned down early. It happens to everyone. Just keep at it.
